The True Origins of Samhain
To find the true origins of Samhain, you have to travel back 2,000 years to the misty hills of the Celtic lands. As autumn gave way to winter and the final harvest was gathered, the ancient Celts prepared for their most sacred festival, celebrated from sunset on October 31 to sunset on November 1.
If you are wondering Why Is Samhain Called Summer's End, the translation is found in Old Irish, where the word directly means the end of the sunny season.
This transition was deeply magical. According to historians at Britannica, Samhain was actually the Celtic New Year's Eve! They believed that light is always born from the dark. Just as a seed sleeps underground before breaking through the soil, they embraced the dark half of the year as a beautiful time of rest and rebirth.
What Ancient Celts Did on Samhain Night
Now imagine what an ancient Samhain actually looked like. It was breathtakingly beautiful.
Across the Celtic countryside, every hearth fire in every home was extinguished. Then a giant community bonfire was lit, and each family would carry a torch home to relight their own hearth from the communal flame. It was believed this shared fire connected every household in blessing and protection for the year ahead.
And oh, the traditions! The ancient Celts believed that on Samhain night, the veil between the living and the spirit world grew impossibly thin. So they:
- Left food and drink offerings outside for their ancestors (and any wandering spirits)
- Wore costumes and masks to disguise themselves from mischievous spirits
- Practiced divination with apples, hazelnuts, and mirrors to glimpse the year ahead
- Told stories around the fire to keep the memory of their ancestors alive
- Feasted on the last harvest together as a community
Every single one of these ancient traditions has a modern echo, from bobbing for apples at Halloween parties, to trick-or-treaters in costume, to tarot card readings on October 31. It really is quite beautiful when you think about it!
When Everything Beautifully Shifted
Fast forward a few centuries. Christianity slowly began spreading through Celtic lands during the 5th and 6th centuries, and instead of trying to erase these beloved traditions, something gentler happened: the old and the new began to blend.
By the 8th century, Pope Gregory III officially moved All Saints' Day (a day to honor Christian saints and martyrs) to November 1, right on top of Samhain. Whether by intention or beautiful cosmic coincidence, this meant the sacred energy of honoring the dead now had two names.
The night before All Saints' Day was called "All Hallows' Eve" (hallowed meaning holy). Say that a few times fast, and you can hear it: All Hallows' Eve → Hallows Eve → Halloween!
So Halloween is quite literally the child of Samhain and All Saints' Day, born from the beautiful merging of two sacred traditions. And All Souls' Day, which follows on November 2, expanded the celebration into a three-day tribute to those beyond the veil.
How Samhain Became Modern Halloween
Now for the part of the story where everything really changed. In the 1800s, waves of Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their Samhain traditions to America. And oh, how those traditions transformed!
- The Irish tradition of carving turnip lanterns (to ward off the wandering spirit "Stingy Jack") became the jack-o'-lantern once Americans discovered pumpkins were way easier to carve!
- "Souling" (going door to door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for soul cakes) evolved into trick-or-treating
- "Guising" (dressing up in costume) became the Halloween costume industry we know today
By the mid-1900s, Halloween in America had become largely secular, playful, and commercial. Which was fun! But somewhere along the way, the sacred meaning behind it began to fade for many. The real magic of Samhain was still there, just quietly waiting to be remembered.
Samhain Today: A Beautiful Modern Revival
And here we are! In the 1960s and 70s, a beautiful revival began. Modern paganism, Wicca, and various earth-based spiritual paths brought Samhain roaring back into public consciousness. Today, millions of people around the world celebrate Samhain not as a spooky holiday, but as a deeply meaningful spiritual moment.
The spiritual meaning of Samhain in modern witchcraft centers on three timeless practices:
- Honoring the ancestors (blood, chosen, or ancestral spirits who guide you)
- Releasing the year that is ending (soft, sacred goodbyes)
- Setting intentions for the darker half of the year (planting seeds for winter)
Modern practitioners might light candles on their ancestor altar, pull tarot cards for the year ahead, host a silent dumb supper with loved ones, or simply light one candle in memory of someone they miss.
