Tarot for Beginners: How to Get Started
Never pulled a tarot card before? No worries at all! Here is a simple guide to help you feel confident with your first reading. (For a deeper walkthrough, see our Tarot 101 beginner's guide.)
Step 1: Get to know your deck — Before doing any readings, spend some time just looking through your tarot cards. Notice the artwork, the colors, the symbols. Hold them in your hands and let yourself get familiar with the energy. There is no rush!
Step 2: Start with a simple one-card pull — You do not need to learn complicated spreads right away. Just shuffle your deck, ask a question or set an intention, and pull one card. Read the meaning in your guidebook and sit with what comes up. This is the easiest way to start building your connection with your beginner tarot deck.
Step 3: Try a three-card spread — Once you feel comfortable, try pulling three cards. The classic spread is Past, Present, Future. But you can also try Situation, Challenge, Advice or Mind, Body, Spirit. Each tarot meditation cards session teaches you something new about yourself!
Step 4: Trust your intuition — The guidebook gives you meanings, but the real magic happens when you start trusting what YOU feel when you see a card. Your first instinct is usually right. The more you practice, the stronger your intuition gets.
Step 5: Make it a ritual — Light some incense or a candle, set up your Wooden Tarot Card Divination Altar, place a crystal nearby, and create a little sacred space for your readings. When you turn it into a ritual, your tarot reading kit becomes so much more powerful and personal.
