Five Tests You Can Do Right Now

Rose quartz is abundant and inexpensive, which means outright forgery is less common than with rarer stones. It is not absent. Here is what to check, in order, with a piece already in your hand.

1. Look for the cloud

Hold it to a light. Real rose quartz is translucent and slightly milky, and the pink often varies subtly across the piece. Flawless, evenly saturated and glassy-clear points to glass.

2. Hunt for bubbles

Rotate it slowly under a bright light and look inside. Round trapped bubbles mean glass. Natural quartz can contain fractures and veils, but not spherical bubbles.

3. Check the temperature

Press it to the inside of your wrist. Quartz is a poor conductor and feels cool for several seconds before it warms. Plastic warms to skin temperature almost immediately.

4. Test the hardness

Rose quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale, harder than steel. A steel blade drawn across an inconspicuous spot should not scratch it. If it does, it is not quartz. Do this on the base, not on a display face.

5. Look for dye in the cracks

Dyed quartz gives itself away where colour pools. Examine any fracture, chip or drill hole. If the pink is noticeably more intense inside the crack than on the surface, it has been dyed.

Fractures. Internal veils are normal. Fractures reaching the surface are weak points, and they matter most on anything you will handle daily or wear.

Polish and symmetry. On a sphere, roll it and watch the highlight travel. An uneven highlight means an uneven grind, and it is the fastest way to judge a cutter's work.
