Mood Ring Meaning, History & More!

You probably already know that colors have an impact in our mood and emotions. But what if we told you that colors can also be a reflection of how we feel? We're talking about the fascinating mood ring and, in this article, we'll cover the meaning, history, and other intriguing details behind it!

How Was The Mood Ring Discovered?

Mood rings were a big trend in the ’70s, making quite the comeback in the ‘90s, as well. And, if you’re someone who is into horoscopes, crystals, and spirituality—there is a high chance that a mood ring may have started your journey into the mystical world!

Some say that the mood ring was first crafted by Josh Reynolds and Maris Ambats in 1975, by binding liquid crystals and Quartz stones.

While other sources state that these pieces were actually invented by the jeweler Marvin Wernick in the late ‘60s when he went on an emergency call with a friend who happened to be a doctor. His friend used a strip of thermotropic material on a young boy’s forehead to check his temperature, which gave Wernick the idea for the mood rings.

Either way, it's safe to say that the mood ring has been around for a while now and has not lost, not even a bit, of its popularity!

The Science Behind Mood Ring Colors

A mood ring consists of bright colors that are heat-activated elements based on thermotropic science (the study of materials that change properties with temperature). The ring changes color as a response to the skin temperature of any human being at any given time. Big temperature fluctuations produce big changes in color and therefore account for the mood ring full color spectrum. Wearing a mood ring is much like wearing a liquid crystal thermometer on a finger.

The rings are made with a special thermochromic material, which is used in the change of geometrical molecules due to temperature change. This physical action of a change in molecular geometry changes the capability of the crystal to absorb light and then reflect it, changing the color of the ring from one side of the color spectrum to the other in which the crystals are embedded.

Mood ring colors are based on the simple principle: not direct to the emotions of the wearer but to changes provoked in skin temperature. A mood ring reacts with a change in color because of heat energy; it changes color with temperature change. For instance, if somebody is becoming anxious or tense, the body temperature may be elevated, and this will, in turn, make the mood ring change color to warmer colors of orange or red. Conversely, a calm and relaxed state might lower the body temperature, resulting in cooler colors like blue or green.

Now, although the scientific basis of mood rings lies at the center of temperature sensitivity and not emotional detection, the colors carry specific emotional states with them.

"This also impelled the invention of mood color charts, which provide a fun and interesting way through which the rings could be interpreted with the wearer's emotional status. Where a mood ring describes science accurately, a thermal reaction by liquid crystals describes an interesting peek into the relationship between body temperature and color perception. Mood rings are fundamentally a kind of jewelry with interactive capabilities that visually have the capacity for a person to playfully speculate about their feelings and, in turn, the mood with friends."

Can Mood Jewelry Really Tell What You’re Feeling?

So, how do mood rings work? Scientifically, mood rings and other mood jewelry activate their color in response to the wearer’s body temperature and the temperature of their surroundings rather than their emotions.

So, the question is: can it really reflect how you’re feeling? It’s possible. There is an interesting scientifically proven correlation between the changes in our body temperature and our current emotional state—showing that mood rings could actually be effective tools.

So there's pretty much no arguing that mood rings offer benefits beyond their unique aesthetic appeal. Firstly, they serve as an excellent ice-breaker, sparking conversations about one's feelings or emotions based on the ring's color changes.

Additionally, they promote self-awareness by helping individuals recognize and understand their emotional states through color variations. For instance, a shift to black might indicate rising stress levels, prompting some needed self-reflection.

If you want to get in touch with your feelings, a mood ring is definitely something you should give a try. It may not be 100% accurate, but it will keep you more aware of the emotional changes you’re experiencing. Just make sure that you don’t end up secretly wishing for mood swings.

After all, it’s quite a thrill when your ring keeps you guessing with every color change!

I recently got a mood ring. I noticed it stayed green most of the day, even now. However, if I moved around, brown would come in like a spot in the green. I had bad back pain yesterday. Is the pain causing the spot? Once I sat for about 5 minutes, it went green again. I just never heard of such!

Purple mood ring, is my go to go color! My girlfriends has one and it’s soooo accurate. When I am around her, I feel reassure that her mood ring turns purple. Is there another color that could show that my girlfriend is feeling content or happy?

Thibault

this is actually true and it makes so much sense!

I apologise, but it not absolutely approaches me. Perhaps there are still variants?
