A father named it after his daughter

In 1974 a Dominican craftsman called Miguel Méndez found sea-blue pebbles on a beach. The villagers told him the ocean had made them. Méndez didn't believe it. He followed the river upstream, into the hills, and found the place the pebbles were really coming from.

He named the stone after his daughter, Larissa, and the Spanish word for sea, mar. Larimar. So from its very first day, this stone was a gift from a parent to a child. It has never really stopped being one.

Look closely and you'll see why the villagers thought the sea made it: light on a shallow, sandy seabed, frozen in stone. No two pieces share the same pattern.

Why nature will never make it again

Larimar is a kind of pectolite, a mineral you can find all over the world. Almost everywhere, it's grey and chalky and nobody gives it a second look.

But in this one volcanic hillside, millions of years ago, a little copper slipped into the crystal where calcium should have been. That tiny mistake turned it the colour of Caribbean shallows. As far as anyone knows, it happened once, and it isn't happening again.
