Every october the shops fill with plastic cauldrons and pointed hats, and the word "witch" gets printed on a polyester dress that will be in a bin by november 2nd.

and every october, the people who actually keep this practice do something quieter. they light a candle. they close the door. they begin.

They refuse to let the night pass without a ritual.

No costume. no party. because to them october 31st is samhain (say "sow-in"), the ancient celtic festival that halloween grew out of, and the night many traditions call the witches' new year.

The belief passed down for centuries is simple: on this night the veil between worlds is at its thinnest. so it's a night to be spent doing something. protecting your home. remembering who came before you. setting the intention you'll carry into the year. a costume is something you wear. a ritual is something you do.

When we lined up what practitioners told us, their night came down to three rituals, done in order. None of them need years of practice. Each one can be started this October with what's in one box.

first ritual

Protect the threshold

every samhain night begins at the door. a candle lit on the step or the sill. a pinch of herbs at each corner of the room. a dark stone in the pocket. it's the oldest ritual of the night, from the days when people believed the thin veil let things wander through.

how the ritual goes

light a white candle at the front door as the sun sets, and say out loud what you're keeping out this year.

The Herb Bowl

This surprised us most. the practitioners with the longest practice barely mentioned anything from a film. no wands, no cauldrons. their second ritual of the night is done with a bowl and a handful of dried herbs: rosemary for remembrance, mugwort for dreams, a bay leaf written on and burned for the year ahead.

Lay the Year's Intention

if samhain is the witches' new year, this is the resolution. except instead of a notebook you'll lose by february, the last ritual of the night is laid out physically: a crystal grid, set on the altar and left up through the hunter's moon.
