MEDITATION
A Thoughtlessly Thoughtful Practice

2021 JANUARY 7

What Should You Know About Meditation Before You Begin?

Meditation is not about becoming a new or a better person. Of course, the benefits of meditation can be exactly that - so don’t get discouraged if that’s what you’re aiming for. But first and foremost - it is a practice to expand your awareness to gain a better perspective and aid your mental health.

So, try not to have unreasonable expectations. This mindful activity can help you achieve a lot - but you’ll get disappointed if the effects of meditation after one or two sessions - are not everything you wished for.

What Is Meditation?

Everyone seems to recognize the word - and therefore understand what it means.

But what do we really know about meditation - apart from a typical depiction of a cross-legged individual, breathing deeply and allegedly thinking of nothing?

Is there... anything else?

After I began to read about the practice - I found incredibly large sums of information. So much so - that I could barely read half of what was provided in the first google pages.

And after many opinions and many different perspectives found in all these articles - something interesting and unexpected happened.

I started to see that despite my own insecurities on the subject - there is really no shame in not knowing about different types of meditation or the difference between healing meditation and chakra meditation.

In fact, that’s the beauty of it. Meditation is something you have to discover for yourself.

It’s not the destination - it’s the journey.

Mindfulness VS Meditation

These two go hand in hand - but do not mean the same, nor do they accompany each other to the same extent in different practices.

Mindfulness is about the quality of living or simply just - being.  Or in other words, it is an ability to appropriately assert, react, and respond to a situation.

It dispels irrational beliefs, heated emotions, criticism, and other unhelpful and unhealthy habits we tend to possess.

And it is absolutely necessary for most meditation. So it can be extremely helpful to practice mindfulness in addition to any meditative engagements.

Many use crystals. They can assist you in creating intentions, becoming more self-aware, or even connecting to the universe. Also, they may complement your meditation sessions in many unique ways.

But there are other types of the practice that require mindfulness less. For example, mantra meditation focuses on the recitation of a mantra to make up a relaxed state. Here, mindfulness is important - but does not play a focal role.

How To Meditate?

Again, there is no single right way to do it - you can create your own version if you wish. But if you'd like to ease your path into this spiritual experience, you can learn to meditate with some tips and guidelines:

How To Meditate?

Again, there is no single right way to do it - you can create your own version if you wish. But if you'd like to ease your path into this spiritual experience, you can learn to meditate with some tips and guidelines:

  1. 1. First - sit or lie down - whichever makes you feel more comfortable.
  2. 2. Give yourself 5 minutes. After you get used to it - you can prolong your time.
  3. 3. And now - just listen to yourself.
  4. 4. It may feel a little unusual at first. The mind - is a strange place, and sitting in silence is no more familiar, so it might even feel uncomfortable on occasion. But stick to it - it will become much more pleasant in the process.
  5. 5. The key is not to try to get rid of your thoughts. The harder you'll attempt to clear your mind - the more persistent and annoying your thoughts will become.
  6. 6. Instead of trying to be a moderator - be an observer and notice your thoughts. Notice your feelings. Observe, but don't judge them - let them flow through you like a wave.

When To Meditate?

Meditation is a skill - so it takes a while to get familiar with the process. But no matter how good your abilities to tune out the outer world are getting - the true success lies in your ability to be consistent with the practice.

That’s why people often choose - daily meditation. While it is a commitment - sitting down just for a few minutes each day can help establish a routine that will ground and teach you to be attentive to the inner self.

But it's all about choosing the right time for you.

Morning meditation can help you prepare for your day, set intentions, gain confidence, and concentrate.

Evening meditation - can help wind down, appreciate the day, connect to yourself.

But those are just a few benefits you'll notice along the way, no matter when you meditate. Some other special advantages you must discover for yourself in due time.
